BRT technology upgrade of Riyadh's bus rapid transit intersections
FLAGSHIP PROJECT
SWARCO delivered supply, installation, integration, testing, and 3-year operations & maintenance for 84 intersections connected to the RCRC Advanced Traffic Control System.
In a nutshell
OVERVIEW
SWARCO delivered the implementation, operations, and maintenance of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) advanced traffic system across 84 intersections as part of the wider Riyadh public transport megaproject led by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC)—supporting the city’s goal to expand public transport, reduce reliance on private cars, and improve mobility.

The challenge
As part of its comprehensive public transport masterplan, the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) launched a large-scale transformation of the city’s mobility infrastructure. Alongside the 180 km Riyadh Metro network with 85 stations, a parallel bus network was introduced to diversify transport options and reduce reliance on private cars.
Within this megaproject, Phase II focused on upgrading 84 key intersections to support the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. The challenge was the implementation, operation, and maintenance of an advanced traffic system capable of ensuring reliable BRT priority and seamless integration into Riyadh’s existing Advanced Traffic Control System. The project required large-scale coordination, robust infrastructure deployment, and long-term operational reliability in a rapidly growing metropolitan environment.
The process
The project, running from October 2020 to September 2025 (including three years of operation and maintenance), covered the full implementation of the BRT Advanced Traffic System at 84 intersections.
SWARCO’s scope included the supply and installation of all above-ground signal and surveillance equipment. This involved installing signal heads, controller cabinets, and surveillance components, as well as supplying, installing, and terminating signal, detection, and camera cables. All systems were connected to existing power sources and fully integrated into the RCRC Advanced Traffic Control System.
Comprehensive integration and testing ensured that each upgraded intersection operated seamlessly within the centralized control environment. The deployed technology included McCain controller cabinets and SWARCO Futurit ALUSTAR TSH signal heads, forming the technical backbone of the upgraded BRT intersections.
The solution
The completed BRT intersection upgrade provides Riyadh with a modern, fully integrated traffic control infrastructure that supports efficient and reliable Bus Rapid Transit operations. By equipping 84 intersections with advanced signal and surveillance technology, the system enhances traffic coordination and enables smooth interaction between public transport and general traffic.
Integrated into the city’s Advanced Traffic Control System, the solution strengthens the overall public transport ecosystem, supporting the long-term goal of reducing private car dependency while improving mobility, economic activity, environmental performance, and quality of life.
As part of Riyadh’s broader public transport megaproject, the upgraded BRT intersections form a key pillar in delivering a future-ready, high-capacity transport network for the city’s current and future needs.
