In a nutshell

OVERVIEW

Gwinnett County, Georgia enhanced its existing traffic infrastructure by deploying Omni eX® Intersection Control Software combined with MyCity Adaptive Traffic Technology. By running adaptive control on third-party 2070 controllers already in use, the county modernized its traffic management approach without major hardware investments, becoming the first in Georgia to implement this innovative solution.

The challenge

Gwinnett County, Georgia — a rapidly growing suburban community northeast of Atlanta — has experienced significant population growth, surpassing one million residents. Its proximity to downtown Atlanta and access via major highways such as I-85 and I-985 make it a key commuter hub within the metro area. However, heavy reliance on cars and continued development have led to increasing congestion, particularly during peak travel times.

With limited opportunities to expand roadway infrastructure, the county needed a smarter way to manage traffic. For over a decade, Gwinnett County had relied on third-party 2070 controllers, and officials wanted to move beyond traditional traffic management approaches. With funding separate from the Georgia Department of Transportation, the county had the flexibility to pursue an innovative adaptive traffic solution without being constrained by legacy procurement models.

The process

To modernize its traffic management system, Gwinnett County partnered with Utilicom as system integrator and SWARCO McCain as technology provider. In November 2024, the county entered into a 12-month contract covering system implementation, performance monitoring, and evaluation.

The project focused on deploying Omni eX® ® Intersection Control Software on the county’s existing third-party 2070 controllers. By April 2025, Omni eX® had been successfully implemented on 11 intersections. The system was then integrated with MyCity Adaptive Traffic Technology, which was officially activated on May 15, 2025.

This approach allowed the county to enhance its infrastructure without replacing existing hardware. The deployment leveraged compatibility with current controllers and detection systems, minimizing disruption and avoiding costly upgrades.

The solution

Gwinnett County successfully implemented Georgia’s first deployment of Omni eX® Intersection Control Software combined with MyCity Adaptive Traffic Technology. The solution delivers adaptive traffic control while utilizing existing 2070 controllers, reducing the need for major hardware investments.

Omni eX® provides a flexible, controller-agnostic solution that supports various cabinet configurations. It enables configuration of inputs, outputs, logic, and NEMA D connectors without external wiring or relays, while ensuring data accuracy through built-in validation and advanced data collection features.

MyCity Adaptive enhances arterial performance by adjusting signal timing in real time according to traffic demand. The system reduces stops, delays, and travel times while improving intersection efficiency and overall mobility.

Monitored 24/7 by SWARCO McCain, the system is continuously fine-tuned to optimize performance. With competitive pricing, strong technical support, and advanced software capabilities, Gwinnett County positioned itself at the forefront of innovative traffic management in Georgia — delivering a cost-effective, future-ready adaptive traffic solution.
