Why FlexiControl?

Temporary traffic situations are a big part of everyday life. Up until now the temporary solutions surrounding constructions sites, road works and other temporary situations have been solved using simple but often running on static blind timers but with Flexicontrol we aim to create a solution where you can combine quick temporary installation and need for adaptations together with the robustness, central systems connectivity and security of the SWARCO ITC controller.

SWARCO FlexiControl will be demonstrated during Intertraffic 2026 in Amsterdam, and start field testing in 2026 in the Solna Municipality in Sweden.

Temporary traffic situations need adaptability

Temporary traffic situations are most likely to create disturbance to all road users, so you want to be quick, robust and able to adapt to any situation. Yet most temporary traffic situations are running with static blind timers, combined with simple detection.

Most often these systems are running standalone without any integration to the central system of the municipality. This creates a situation in which a municipality is completely in the dark about what is happening at a new-, and likely very complex traffic situation.

With SWARCO FlexiControl we aim to provide an adaptable, secure, and integrated temporary traffic control solutions. With FlexiControl we help cities and municipalities maintain efficiency, collect data, and reduce disruption during urban transformation work. Thus increasing safety and visibility of your temporary traffic management solution.

With the FlexiControl solution, we will leverage the full potential of the ITC Traffic Signal Controller. Enabling a temporary site to be connected to the central system, adapt to different traffic situations, and be monitored by your teams. We can add our Public Transport Solution: Smart Priority, to ensure that buses in your city still have priority in the temporary traffic situation, as they do at all other regular intersections.

SWARCO FlexiControl will use wireless connections between traffic controller and traffic signals. The traffic light will run on batteries and the hardware layout will differ, depending on your situation. Different detection techniques can be used in with this solution.

With FlexiControl, SWARCO is stepping into the field of temporary traffic solutions. As complexity increases, we believe we can add more value to our customers in terms of safety, robustness, while ensuring the connectivity, monitoring and flexibility that you need for your city:

  • Traffic expertise
  • C-ITS functionality
  • Central system connectivity
  • Monitoring Air pollution
  • Emergency vehicle priority
  • Public Transport Prioritization
  • Adaptive control (Smart intersection, ImFlow, Smart AI)

Let us help you work on your city in an efficient, safe, and controlled way.

The Better Way. Every Day.

Quote

"The main idea is to create a better flow of traffic at temporary road situations. The aim is to compromise as little as possible.
Why shouldn’t there be bus prioritization during temporary road works?"

A couple of months ago, SWARCO has deployed a fully operational Digital Twin that continuously mirrors the city's traffic network, providing real-time insights, short-term forecasts, and scenario-based decision support. Unlike many Digital Twin initiatives that remain at the concept or pilot stage, Landau in der Pfalz's solution is live, integrated into daily operations, and actively supporting traffic management decisions.
